“A Statement of Work or “SOW” as it is commonly referred to, is a formal document that defines the services to be delivered through a project or program. More formally, it is a document that establishes the contractual basis upon which a project will be managed. If developed properly, it can serve both as a management tool and a legal document for performance. The SOW document describes the services being delivered under a contract including the scope of work, milestones and deliverables, timelines and budget for the project, and works in conjunction with the standard terms and conditions of a formal contract agreement. SOWs apply to a range of projects typically in the specialized or complex categories of IT, professional services or outsourced services. These engagements can vary from individual consulting projects to large scale, multi-‐billion dollar contracting agreements. Because it is not clear cut when to use an SOW within companies, there is a general misunderstanding of what an SOW is and when it should be used in projects. Throughout this whitepaper we will provide guidelines for companies to develop a more formal SOW management program.”
