What is “Responsible AI” in procurement?

Responsible AI is a set of strategies and practices designed to find and reduce the risk of AI-influenced decisions and autonomy-supported activities performed in the course of business operations. For procurement teams, Responsible AI includes defining accountability and governance for AI systems that may be used by suppliers on behalf of a customers’ business, rather than AI that’s solely used by employees within the business’ four walls. Rather than introducing new processes and compliance practices, our certificate program shows how best-in-class procurement teams are integrating RAI into existing workstreams such as: stakeholder engagement, category management, strategic sourcing, supplier scorecards and reviews, and third-party risk management. Because suppliers are more likely to adopt AI for critical business functions before large enterprises, the use of AI by suppliers is often happening without the full awareness and consent of business stakeholders. Thus, our certificate presents both management frameworks and practical tools for procurement teams to discover and reduce AI risk through supplier questions in RFPs, governance recommendations for stakeholder engagement sessions, and accountability measures to help teams avoid snafus where individuals attempt to skirt responsibility by saying “the model made me do it.”

Companies use Responsible AI for Suppliers and Third Parties to adapt their procurement processes to a world of ubiquitous AI that many market analysts will be part of a macro-economic change with larger societal implications than the introduction of the Internet. Responsible AI can also be a way to streamline supplier onboarding, avoid last-minute interventions into negotiations by Ethical AI Councils and has a data-driven internal business case that can also result in dramatic cost reductions, especially for in categories where service provider suppliers are rapidly implementing AI to perform dramatically more tasks per headcount per hour. By aligning this cost reduction opportunity with a Responsible AI program, procurement teams can help make sure that the profit margin expansion resulting from a suppliers’ adoption of AI is also shared with the procuring organization through improvements to pricing, targeted incentives, and performance-based rebates.

To put it simply, a Responsible AI governance plan for procurement teams helps companies achieve big goals that contribute to their success. That’s why it’s important to learn about the risks and opportunities available to your role linked to Responsible AI, helping you position yourself as a strategic thought partner to business stakeholders fearful or excited about AI.

What will I learn in the RAIG program?

SIG University’s RAIG program provides in-depth training on the hard and soft skills of Responsible AI, giving students the tangible and practical knowledge they need to be successful through practical examples, use cases, and tools such as RFx question banks, governance policy templates, and real-world scenarios from the headlines. In an online classroom, students are exposed to Responsible AI methodologies, best practices in Risk Mapping, the Sheridan Framework, and OODA, and are also equipped with a toolkit of resources allowing them to add value in the office immediately. You’ll receive next practice insights in this critical area of novel capabilities which are challenging the future of work.

The program was developed by leading Responsible AI practitioners, academics, and subject matter experts. Modules are learn-at-your-own-pace, with repeatable self-serve assessments and a moderated discussion forum. The RAIG program is the most well-rounded curriculum available on the market for those seeking actionable insights, best practices, and management frameworks to adapt existing, emergent, and legacy processes to the fast-moving work of ubiquitous AI, especially as it increasingly enters the built environment, physical supply chain, and everyday work habits of suppliers.

Who should take the RAIG program?

The RAIG program is appropriate for both senior professionals and those new to the profession with limited experience in procurement and sourcing. The program is especially useful for anyone working in sourcing, category management, procurement operations, procurement transformation, third party risk management, and related fields. Sourcing teams that take the RAIG program together can improve their performance by gaining a baseline understanding of fundamental concepts and building a common language. Businesses will benefit from sourcing teams that know how to spot responsible cost reduction opportunities from suppliers using AI, as well as risk areas that could create novel liabilities, such as the what happens to corporate insurance programs in a world of self-driving cars, autonomous forklifts, and property managers using AI-enabled real estate pricing.

It’s important to note that the program is not just for practitioners, it’s also for the providers who serve them.

How is the RAIG program structured?

The RAIG program is a learning journey that is structured in 20 modules that take approximately 15 minutes each to complete depending on your learning style. These 20 modules are complementary and cumulative: the final module requires having completed the previous 19.  You begin with learning the hard skills of discovering and assessing AI risk across your spend and supplier base, then move onto key Responsible AI Governance principles and finish your journey by focusing on the soft skills of inter-linking Responsible AI with relevant stakeholder conversations across your weekly responsibilities.

Each module, you will:

  • View a video presentation and additional reading materials
  • Take quizzes after each lesson to assess your retention
  • Engage in a discussion forum with peers in your field across industries
