Going Green: Finding Value in Managing Your Company’s Surplus Asset Stream

The SIG Resource Center is moving to The SIG Community. If you are a SIG Member, or enrolled in SIG University, and don’t have access yet, you can do so here. Already have access? Log in and visit the new SIG Resource Center.

In this session, panelists will discuss an often overlooked value stream; that of surplus and retired assets. Because this is rarely considered a core competency of an organization, the management of it is often relegated to a lower priority of a service department. Puget Sound Energy (PSE) will outline how they realized a fourfold increase in returns in one year by outsourcing the management of surplus sales, thereby breaking up established relationships through competitive sourcing and through support from executive management for a change in the surplus policy. This shift in contracting and policy brought PSE more than $2.5 million in direct revenue to the bottom line, and transformed PSE to a greener company in the process, dramatically reducing the company’s unmanaged waste.

Topics in this session included:

  • How to increase your returns by 400%
  • How to professionalize your handling of surplus and waste
  • How to become a greener company
  • How to expose relationships not in the company’s best interest
