Businesses are increasingly interested in “pay by the drink” utility computing. This approach to service delivery has the potential to dramatically reduce costs by providing IT and business users with transparency into IT usage, enabling smarter decisions about IT consumption. To successfully implement utility-based pricing, clients and service providers must work together to identify and eliminate existing constraints and inefficiencies into how IT services are delivered. In many cases, clients must reconfigure existing internal processes, while service providers must reassess their traditional business models. This presentation will focus on the characteristics and benefits of utility-based computing, define basic elements of an implementation strategy and discuss how governance mechanisms can facilitate effective demand management.
