According to Deloitte University Press’ “Global Human Capital Trends 2015,” one-third (34 percent) of all workers in the United States are contract workers. The same report notes that more than half (51 percent) of the 3,300 business leaders surveyed said their need for contingent workers will continue to grow over the next three to five years. This is a trend that has accelerated dramatically in the decade since 2005, when the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported its most recent analysis of “Contingent And Alternative Employment Arrangements.” At that time, the BLS noted that “using three alternative measures, contingent workers accounted for 1.8 to 4.1 percent of total employment.” Why has the contingent workforce grown so dramatically it the last 10 years?
