General Session Featuring a Panel Discussion with Vantage Partners, Unum Group, Medtronic, JPMorgan Chase
Legal Department Transformation and the Role for Sourcing
A “perfect storm” of globalization, technology changes, and an economic recession has significantly shifted the bargaining power between law firms and their large corporate clients. But many companies are at risk of missing the real opportunity by using that newfound leverage just to obtain some discounts in the hourly rates charged by outside counsel. Rate discounts are short-lived, often fail to translate into real savings, and can put relationships at risk because of how they are negotiated. More thoughtful law departments are taking advantage of the opportunity created by the current conditions to change: the nature of their relationship with outside counsel, how they consume and pay for legal services, and how those services are delivered. For this panel discussion, Danny Ertel of Vantage Partners will tee up some of the challenges discussed in his July 2012 Harvard Business Review article, “Points of Law: Unbundling Corporate Legal Services to Unlock Value” and ask our panelists to talk about their own experiences moving past early sourcing wins to a real transformation of their company’s legal departments.
You will learn:
- Where to look next, after consolidating spend
- What else to outsource besides document review
- Transformation opportunities for both large and small law departments
- Change management challenges to address proactively
