Category management is the process of categorizing goods and services and then managing these categories as ‘business units’ to achieve improved outcomes in the most effective and efficient way. It is about taking a project management approach to buying goods and services which is structured, measurable and drives continuous improvement. It requires a detailed understanding of spend, demand, providers and markets and enables procurement professionals to challenge how goods and services are acquired and delivered. The approach was first developed in the 1980s and has since been successfully used in both the private and public sector. The approach can also be used to support collaborative. This guide provides a brief introduction to category management with information links throughout. It explores the potential benefits and challenges of using category management. The guide also contains case examples.
