Regulatory burden has long been a concern within the banking industry, and policymakers are taking notice—holding hearings, commissioning studies and proposing legislation to lessen the load. Recently, attention has been devoted to compliance costs that weigh more heavily on smaller banks than their larger counterparts in the community banking category. But how much more of a burden do the smaller banks bear? Quite a bit, according to our analysis of data on compliance costs obtained in a recent survey conducted by state banking commissioners and the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS)…
