You may already be experienced with working as an independent contractor or consultant. But even if you haven’t yet stepped into the world of contracting, the question is no longer “if,” but rather, “when?” Before the recession, independent contractors were already the fastest growing segment of the United States workforce. The 2005 contingent workforce study from the Bureau of Labor Statistics counted independent contractors at 10.3 million and growing. At the time the analysis attributed the big talent shift from “permanent” to contingent as part of a larger movement toward a “Project Economy” a trend bolstered by globalization, technology, and demographic shifts.

This toolkit covers the fundamentals of independent consulting, approaches to calculating bill rates, and some more advanced topics for current consultants.
